CAHS statement on results of marriage equality survey
The Council of Australian Humanist Societies (CAHS) welcomes today's (15/11/17) announcement by the Australian Bureau of Statistics of a 61.6% yes vote for marriage equality in the Australain marriage law postal survey. We urge the Parliament to move as expeditiously as possible to legislate for marriage equality now. The battle for marriage equality is not yet over. But hopefully it is moving much closer to success now. Now it is time to change the law! CAHS President Lyndon Storey said "Along with so many other Australians I am delighted by the results of the survey. Now it is clearly time for the delaying tactics and the obstruction of Australia's progress to marriage equality to stop. Its time to respect the views of the vast majority of Australians, and to respect the principles of respect for the equal dignity of all human beings which underlie support for marriage equality. Its time to change the law to bring about marriage equality in Australia now."
